Origins: A Spark of Connection (September 5, 2024)
Wakhong began as a humble initiative, born from the shared vision of mental health professionals seeking to foster meaningful dialogue. Every Tuesday, this small group gathered to reflect, exchange ideas, and nurture their collective growth. What started as casual conversations soon blossomed into a vibrant space for connection, empathy, and mutual care.
On September 5, 2024, Wakhong took its first bold step into the public sphere at Kangla Nongpok Torban. The mission was clear: create safe, non-judgmental spaces where men could openly discuss their mental health. Approaching men in an open, welcoming environment, the team sparked gentle yet impactful conversations about emotional well-being. The response was profound—men embraced the opportunity to share, revealing a deep, unmet need for such spaces. This heartfelt reception ignited Wakhong’s momentum, confirming the urgency of its mission.

Building Momentum: Breaking the Silence (September 6–8, 2024)
Encouraged by the success of the first event, Wakhong organized a second pop-up session on September 6, 2024, at Khuman Lampak. The focus remained steadfast: dismantling the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and challenging the notion that masculinity equates to emotional stoicism. These sessions invited men to share their burdens and embrace vulnerability as a strength.
On September 8, 2024, amidst ongoing civil unrest, Wakhong, with support from The Collective Trust, created a safe circle for reflection and healing. Participants gathered to process personal and systemic challenges, engaging in raw, honest discussions about emotional and relational well-being. These moments underscored a powerful truth: community is a cornerstone of healing, especially in times of crisis. Wakhong actively sought feedback, fostering open dialogue and refining its approach with every insight and critique.
A Setback and a Lesson: Adapting to Crisis (September 15, 2024)
Wakhong planned a third pop-up event for September 15, 2024, but escalating tensions and a curfew forced its cancellation. While this setback was disheartening, it highlighted the need for adaptive, responsive care in volatile times. The pause allowed the team to regroup, reflect, and reaffirm their commitment to supporting the community through uncertainty.
Resilience and Renewal: Deepening the Dialogue (September 22, 2024)
Undeterred, Wakhong returned on September 22, 2024, at Khuman Lampak with renewed purpose. The discussions that day were bold and unfiltered, tackling topics often shrouded in silence—grief, shame, and the pressure to “be strong.” The depth of these conversations reinforced Wakhong’s vital role as a space for authentic connection and emotional resilience. The growing demand for such spaces fueled the team’s determination to expand and evolve.

A New Chapter: Wakhong Takes Root (September 28–29, 2024)
By late September, Wakhong’s vision crystallized into a structured, intentional support group for men. On September 28–29, 2024, the initiative announced its official launch, inviting anyone seeking connection to join. Wakhong was envisioned as a “bamboo grove”—a symbol of strength, flexibility, and openness where stigma is left behind, and authentic support thrives.
The support groups operate in three-month cycles, with the inaugural cohort running from October to December 2024. Sessions are held on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, fostering a consistent space for growth and reflection. At the end of each cycle, groups dissolve, and new ones form, ensuring a fresh, focused environment for participants.
Chapter 3: Expansion and Inclusion (2025)
In 2025, Wakhong embarked on its third chapter, embracing a broader, more inclusive vision. Recognizing the value of diverse perspectives, the initiative opened its doors to all genders, creating a space where shared life challenges could be explored through varied experiences. This evolution enriched Wakhong’s mission, fostering deeper empathy and understanding.
Geographically, Wakhong expanded its reach with a new chapter in Moirang, led by the Matai Society. This group focuses on supporting internally displaced individuals and relief volunteers impacted by the ongoing crisis. Upholding Wakhong’s core values of community, care, and compassion, the Moirang chapter provides a vital lifeline for those navigating trauma and displacement.

Looking Ahead: A Legacy of Care
Wakhong’s journey—from a small gathering of professionals to a growing movement for mental health and collective care—reflects the power of community-driven healing. Each step, from the first conversation at Kangla Nongpok Torban to the inclusive chapters of 2025, has been guided by a commitment to empathy, resilience, and authentic connection.
As Wakhong continues to evolve, it remains a beacon of hope and a reminder that no one has to face life’s challenges alone. With every session, every story shared, and every new chapter, Wakhong is building a future where mental health is destigmatized, and collective care is a cornerstone of community life.
